Small-Town Ontario
9 am – 12 pm Almonte
Adaptive re-use design projects for several former textile mills. The work of architect Peter Mansfield, community organizations, creative financiers, the engagement with the arts community, the formation of the recent Heritage Conservation District are some of the topics and sites to be visited
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm: Perth
Perth is celebrating its 200th year, and is actually on the Rideau Canal Waterway system. Algonquin College’s Heritage Institute, the fascinating heritage trades program they have developed there, the enthusiasm of their Dean, and instructors will be showcased there. Downtown Heritage Perth was Canada’s first downtown Main Street Canada project and there are many examples of rehabilitation of heritage structures all owing their longevity to that initiative and the persistence of John Stewart, who owns Codes Mill – an adaptive re-use exemplar, and who was involved in many other heritage projects.
There is much to see in both places!
